Tanka Poetry: Structure, Themes, and Modern Value
Tanka poetry is a traditional form of Japanese verse. It consists of five lines with a total of 31 syllables. The lines follow a specific syllable pattern of 5-7-5-7-7. This poetic form has roots that go back over a thousand years. It is known for its elegance and emotional depth.
Structure of Tanka
Lines 1 & 3: 5 syllables
Lines 2, 4 & 5: 7 syllables
Themes and Style
Tanka often explores themes such as nature, love, and human emotions. It allows poets to express complex feelings in a concise manner. The first part of the poem typically presents an observation or a scene. The latter half provides a reflection or an emotional response to that observation.
This form promotes clarity and conciseness. It ensures that every word matters. It also highlights the elegance of language in a small space. Tanka continues to be a valued medium for modern and traditional poets globally.
Every Tuesday, Poetic Reveries publish a Tanka poetry prompt on Instragram and I usually participate. Here are some of my latest creations.
Seed of Hope
Wild brambles emerge
through stones in my backyard’s soil,
cracking barren earth.
Amid withered, thorn-clad roses,
one small seed of hope remains.

Autumn Last Leaf
I close my eyes,
rain runs down my face
only a drop remains.
The sentient tree wipes my cheek
with autumn’s last leaf.
Battle Cry
A battle cry sounds
echoing through stone-built halls.
Empty rooms remain
where once great kings rose and fell;
a gold chalice left behind.
Season of Mist
The season of mist
settles on the quiet lake,
a veil of silver.
Birds flee like arrows at dusk,
chasing what’s lost in the rain.

Unchained
Unchained, my hands bare,
grasp for what I cannot hold.
Dandelion seed,
blowing softly southwards now,
lands gently within my palm.
Amber Light
A shadow dances
across the wooden floorboards
bathed in amber light.
It reaches like climbing vines
towards the sun's quiet farewell.
